Alex Garland's Brilliantly Sexy A.I.’s in ‘Ex Machina’

He is perhaps best known for his collaborations with Danny Boyle. After the Oscar winning director adapted his novel, ‘The Beach,’ into a vehicle for Leonardo Dicaprio, writer Alex Garland was brought on to script his non-zombie take on the undead apocalypse (’28 Days Later’) and one of the great post-modern science fiction films of all time (‘Sunshine’). Now, after working on such divergent efforts as ‘Never Let Me Go’ and ‘Dredd,’ Garland is prepared to step behind the lens for his directorial début, a surreal something called ‘Ex Machina.’

Returning to the future shock genre, the film stars Domhnall Gleeson (soon to be seen in a little title you may have heard of – ‘Star Wars Episode VII’) as an employee of famed computer whiz Oscar Isaac (‘Inside Llewyn Davis’). When the former wins a chance to spend the weekend with his idol, he jumps at the chance, only to learn he is actually part of an experiment testing a new form of A.I. – otherwise known as artificial intelligence. Turns out, Isaac’s character has created a humanoid robot (Alicia Vikander) who may or may not be using her programming for ulterior means. The recently released trailer is intriguing. Check it out:

So – a sexy robot seduces a nerd, with an aura of something sinister in the air. Hopefully, there’s a bit more thought and allegorical heft to what Garland is after. Now, his last look into advanced science turned out to be – with Boyle’s help – as close to ’2001: A Space Odyssey’ we’ve had in the last few decades. It will be interesting to see if he can pull off something similar (or even remotely close) on his own. The visuals here are intriguing. Hopefully, Garland as the ideas to match. The UK gets to look at his handiwork coming this January, however the US will have to wait until April 2015.

It's my pleasure to introduce my self..well, I'm The Geekiest. I tie my own shoes, brush my own hair, and make my own bed... (well, only if my mom isn't at home.) During the day, I can be found sitting in an office cubicle, feverishly tapping my phone with hopes of getting a new high score on Tetris. I like to spend my evenings watching re-runs of Firefly while sipping on a glass of Chardonnay. I play a mean game of rock-paper-scissors (was the national champion for 2 years straight), and love the smell of pop tarts in the morning (part of a complete breakfast!)
