Let’s face it – kids love minions. Or perhaps, better said, THE Minions. These little yellow underlings, bereft of brains and capable of calamitous physical shtick, have been the main reason why both ‘Despicable Me‘ and its sequel, ‘Despicable Me 2,’ have earned nearly a billion and a half dollars at the box office…and why not? They’re a goofball guarantee. Is the storyline sagging? Throw in some minions. Can’t find a way to end a scene. Enter the minions. Need a laugh here or a cutesy moment there…well, you know the drill.
Now, Universal is casting the human element of its hit franchise aside – at least, for part of the plot – with ‘Minions: The Movie.’ Long rumored to be in the works, Collider.com is reporting that this origin story will show us how, for as long as they have existed, these confused little creatures have lived to serve only the most evil masters around. We get to see them schlep for a T-Rex, Napoleon, and the Pharaohs of Egypt. We then come to 1968 B.G. (before Gru) and the characters’ arrival in New York City. Check out the just released trailer:
Cool – but concerning. Why? Well, we don’t even get to see a single shot of Sandra Bullock’s female super-villain, Scarlet Overkill. She’s apparently part of this effort as well. The studio synopsis also suggests our crazy critters will wind up in Swinging London circa the Mod movement (or something like that), but that stuff is MIA as well. Granted, what’s here now is gold, but there is apparently much more to look forward to. Not to worry, however. Universal have nine months to drive us to desperation with their Minion marketing excess. We’ll see how many secrets remain come the movie’s release on July 10, 2015.
